Sicilian painter Pietro Novelli died on this day in 1647 in Palermo. Novelli trained with his father in Monreale and continued his studies in Palermo where he came to know the work of Dutch painter Anthony Van Dyck, who visited the city in 1624.  Novelli also traveled to Rome and Naples in the 1620s where he was exposed to Renaissance masters and Baroque contemporaries, including Giovanni Lanfranco and Jusepe de Ribera. Primarily a painter of religious scenes, Novelli is recognized today as Sicily’s most important artist of the seventeenth century.

Exploring “Ghost City” (город-призрак) in Seredinkovo, Russia

For more bizarre and beautiful photos from “Ghost City” in Seredinkovo, explore the Город Призрак location page.

Old taverns, abandoned docks and ghost ships are all part of “Ghost City” (город-призрак), a park located in the small town of Seredinkovo in the Russian countryside. The park premises were originally constructed as a Russian movie set in 2010, and were designed to look like an 18th-century European city. Now open to the public, the former film set allows visitors to explore the “city” and dress up in period costumes. With replicas of prisons, gallows, hotels, cemeteries, a fort and more, the park offers opportunities to capture time-worn landscapes for visitors and Instagrammers alike.

Jason Alexander Was Confronted By A Pro-Gun Activist. His Response Was Like Nothing I’ve Ever Heard.

Jason Alexander — best known as George Costanza from the popular TV show “Seinfeld” — is a pretty thoughtful guy in real life. And he’s totally happy to wax politics, even with people he may not agree with.

Here, Alexander shares an interesting story from the campaign trail, when he challenged a gentleman to think a little more deeply about what he stands for. His story actually got me thinking about the issue in a new light.

"It will never work," they said.

They were wrong.

Enjoy this mid-week blend of science and silliness from It’s Okay To Be Smart and share with your goat-loving friends!

Costume Design: James Acheson
Art Direction: John Beard & Keith Pain

Two things blown my mind here, the overall geometric sci-fi ambient and Sam Lowry’s mom. The art direction of this film is well known for it links with German Expressionism and Film Noir; so sublime that chills your skin and make you feel hopeless in a way (or I guess that’s the all point of this movie).

Ida (Sam Lowry’s mom) is the most beautiful flower in this film in my opinion, beautiful but full of misery, consumed by vanity, so sick, so shallow, so unpredictable.
